아시아 청년들과 만남,

사랑하는 젊은 친구 여러분,
“저희가 여기서 지내면 좋겠습니다”(마태 17, 4). 이는 성 베드로 사도가 타보르 산에서 영광 속에 변모하신 주님께 드린 말씀입니다. 정말 우리가 오늘 이곳, 한국 교회 초기에 주님의 영광을 드러낸 순교성지에서 함께 지내고 있다는 것은 참으로 좋은 일입니다. 아시아 전역의 젊은이들이 함께 모인 이 대회를 통해서 우리는, 예수님의 영광이 우리 가운데에 계심을, 모든 국가와 언어와 민족을 포용하는 교회 안에 계심을, 그리고 모든 것을 새롭게 젊게 살아있게 하시는 성령 안에 계심을 느낄 수 있습니다! 따뜻한 환대와 열정, 즐거운 찬양, 신앙 고백, 그리고 여러분의 다양하고 풍부한 문화를 보여준 아름다운 공연에 모두 감사 드립니다. 특별히 여러분의 희망과 문제와 관심사들을 저와 함께 나누었던 세 젊은이들에게 감사를 드립니다. 저는 그들의 이야기를 주의 깊게 들었으며, 이를 마음속에 간직하겠습니다. 유흥식 라자로 주교님의 소개 말씀에도 감사 드리며 여러분 모두에게 마음을 다하여 인사를 드립니다. 오늘 저는 여러분과 함께 제 6차 아시아 청년대회 주제의 일부인 “순교자의 영광이 너희를 비춘다”에 대하여 생각해 보고자 합니다. 주님께서는 순교자들의 영웅적인 증언을 통해 당신 영광을 비추셨던 것처럼, 여러분의 삶에서 당신의 영광이 빛나게 하시고, 또 여러분을 통하여 아시아 대륙에 생명의 빛을 밝히기를 원하고 계십니다. 오늘 그리스도께서는 여러분의 마음의 문을 두드리고 계십니다. 일어나 깨어있으라고, 또 삶에서 진정 소중한 것들이 무엇인지 깨달으라고 부르고 계십니다. 뿐만 아니라, 세상 밖으로 나아가 다른 이들의 마음의 문을 두드리고, 그들의 삶 안에 그리스도를 받아들이도록 초대하라고 요청하고 계십니다. 아시아 청년들이 모이는 이 훌륭한 대회를 통하여 우리는 하느님의 영원한 계획 안에서 교회의 역할이 무엇인지 알 수 있습니다. 여러분은 세상 곳곳에서 모인 젊은이들과 함께, 우리 모두가 평화와 우정을 나누며 사는 세상, 장벽을 극복하고 분열을 치유하며 폭력과 편견을 거부하는 세상을 만드는데 도움이 되기를 바라고 있습니다. 바로 이것이야말로 하느님께서 우리에게 원하시는 일입니다. 교회는 전 인류의 일치를 위한 씨앗이 되어야 합니다. 그리스도 안에서, 모든 국가와 민족들이 일치를 이루도록, 그러나 다양성을 파괴하는 것이 아니라 오히려 다양성을 인정하고 조화를 이루어 더 풍요롭게 하는 일치를 이루도록 부름 받고 있습니다. 하지만 세상은 이런 놀라운 전망과 계획으로부터 얼마나 동떨어져 있습니까! 우리가 뿌리려는 선행과 희망의 씨앗이, 우리 주변뿐 아니라 바로 내 마음 안에 있는 이기심, 적대감, 불의라는 잡초에 질식해 버리는 경우가 또 얼마나 많습니까! 우리를 괴롭히는 사회의 빈부 격차는 점점 더 벌어지고 있습니다. 우리 삶에 값비싼 대가를 치르게 하는 물질과 권력, 쾌락 숭배의 징후들을 우리는 봅니다. 우리 가까이에 있는 많은 친구와 동료들이 엄청난 물질적 번영에도 불구하고, 정신적 빈곤, 외로움, 남모를 절망감에 고통 받고 있습니다. 이러한 세상에 하느님의 자리는 더 이상 없는 것처럼 보입니다. 마치 정신적인 사막이 온 세상으로 퍼져나가고 있는 것 같습니다. 이는 청년들에게도 영향을 미쳐서 희망을 앗아가고, 많은 경우에 삶 그 자체를 앗아가기도 합니다. 그러나 여러분은 바로 이러한 세상 속으로 나아가 희망의 복음, 예수 그리스도의 복음, 그리고 하느님 나라의 약속을 전하고 증언하라는 부름을 받았습니다. 예수님께서는 비유를 통하여, 희망과 구원의 메시지를 받아들이는 사람이 있는 곳이라면 어디든 하느님 나라가 조용히 와서 소리 없이 자라날 것이라고 말씀하십니다. 예수님의 영은 모든 인간의 마음에 새로운 생명을 불어넣고, 그 어떠한 상황도, 가장 절망적인 상황까지도 변화시킬 수 있다고 복음은 우리에게 가르치고 있습니다. 바로 이것이 학교, 직장, 가정, 지역 공동체 안에서 여러분이 이 시대를 함께 살아가는 이들과 나누어야 할 메시지입니다. 예수님께서 죽은 이들 가운데서 되살아나셨기 때문에, 우리는 주님께 영원한 생명의 말씀이 있다는 것을 압니다(요한 6, 68). 주님의 말씀에 모든 이의 마음을 움직이고 악을 선으로 이기며 세상을 바꾸고 구원하는 힘이 있다는 것을 압니다. 사랑하는 젊은 친구 여러분, 이러한 시대에 주님께서는 바로 여러분에게 의지하고 계십니다! 주님은 여러분이 세례를 받던 그날 여러분의 마음에 들어오셨고, 견진을 받던 그날 여러분에게 성령을 내려주셨습니다. 또한 성체 안에 현존해 계시면서 끊임없이 여러분에게 힘을 주시어 여러분이 세상 앞에 주님을 증언할 수 있게 해 주십니다. 주님께 “예’ 하고 대답할 준비가 되셨습니까? 정말 준비 되셨습니까?
이제 여러분이 진실되고 기쁜 마음으로 복음을 증언할 수 있는 방법 세 가지를 제안해 드리겠습니다. 이 세가지를 늘 생각하시고 여러분 삶의 원칙이 되게 하십시오. 첫째, 그리스도께서 여러분에게 주시는 힘을 믿으십시오. 그분 말씀의 진리와 은총의 힘에 대한 희망을 잃지 마십시오. 여러분은 죽음에서 생명으로 건너가는 주님의 파스카로 세례를 받았으며, 우리 마음에 살아 계시는 성령의 힘으로 견진을 받았습니다. 이러한 영적인 힘을 결코 의심하지 마십시오. 둘째, 날마다 기도 안에서 주님과 가까이 지내십시오. 하느님을 경배하십시오. 주님께 대한 경배를 잊지 마십시오. 주님의 성령이 여러분의 마음을 들어올려 아버지의 뜻을 알고 실행하는데 도움을 주시게 하십시오. 성체 성사로부터 기쁨과 힘을 얻으십시오. 정기적으로 고해성사를 받아, 여러분 마음이 순수함을 잃지 않고 흐트러지지 않게 하십시오. 본당의 일에 적극적으로 열심히 참여하시기를 바랍니다. 또 사랑의 복음을 외면하지 마십시오. 최선을 다해 사랑의 실천에 참여하십시오. 마지막으로, 복음에 반대하는 수많은 유혹들이 우리를 에워싸고 있으니, 여러분의 모든 생각과 말과 행위가 그리스도 말씀의 지혜와 진리의 힘으로 인도되게 하십시오. 그리스도께서는 여러분이 모든 일을 어떻게 해 나가야 하는지 가르쳐 주시고, 또 매일매일 당신이 여러분에 대해 어떤 계획을 갖고 계시는지 알려 주실 것입니다. 만약 그리스도께서 여러분에게 사제직이나 수도생활로 당신을 섬기도록 부르신다면, 두려움 없이 “예”하고 대답할 수 있는 은총도 함께 내려주실 것입니다. 그리스도께서는 참된 행복과 완성을 향한 길을 여러분에게 보여주실 것입니다. 이제 제가 가야 할 시간입니다. 주일 미사 때 여러분을 다시 만나 이야기 하기를 기대하고 있겠습니다. 이제, 우리가 이렇게 함께 할 수 있도록 강복해 주신 주님께 감사 드리고, 아시아와 전 세계에 주님의 사랑을 기쁜 마음으로 충실히 증언할 힘을 주시도록 간청합시다. 우리의 어머니이신 성모 마리아께서 여러분을 보살펴 주시고 여러분이 그 아들 예수님 곁에 늘 가까이 머물게 해주시기를 빕니다. 또한 세계 청년 대회를 처음 시작하신 성 요한 바오로 2세께서도 하늘로부터 항상 여러분을 이끌어 주시기를 빕니다. 크나큰 사랑으로 여러분에게 저의 강복을 드립니다.

Dear Young Friends,
“It is good for us to be here!” (Mt 17:4). These words were spoken by Saint Peter on Mount Tabor as he stood in the presence of Jesus transfigured in glory. Truly it is good for us to be here, together, at this shrine of the Korean Martyrs, in whom the Lord’s glory was revealed at the dawn of the Church’s life in this country. In this great assembly, which brings together young Christians from throughout Asia, we can almost feel the glory of Jesus present in our midst, present in his Church which embraces every nation, language and people, present in the power of his Holy Spirit who makes all things new, young and alive!
I thank you for your warm welcome, and for the gift of your enthusiasm, your joyful songs, your testimonies of faith, and your beautiful expressions of the variety and richness of your different cultures. In a special way, I thank the three young people who shared with me your hopes, your problems and your concerns; I listened to them carefully, and I will keep them in mind. I thank Bishop Lazzaro You Heung-sik for his words of introduction and I greet all of you from my heart.
This afternoon I would like reflect with you on part of the theme of this Sixth Asian Youth Day: “The Glory of the Martyrs Shines on You”. Just as the Lord made his glory shine forth in the heroic witness of the martyrs, so too he wants to make his glory shine in your lives, and through you, to light up the life of this vast continent. Today Christ is knocking at the door of your heart. He calls you to rise, to be wide awake and alert, and to see the things in life that really matter. What is more, he is asking you to go out on the highways and byways of this world, knocking on the doors of other people’s hearts, inviting them to welcome him into their lives.
This great gathering of Asian young people also allows us to see something of what the Church herself is meant to be in God’s eternal plan. Together with young people everywhere, you want to help build a world where we all live together in peace and friendship, overcoming barriers, healing divisions, rejecting violence and prejudice. And this is exactly what God wants for us. The Church is meant to be a seed of unity for the whole human family. In Christ, all nations and peoples are called to a unity which does not destroy diversity but acknowledges, reconciles and enriches it.
How distant the spirit of the world seems from that magnificent vision and plan! How often the seeds of goodness and hope which we try to sow seem to be choked by weeds of selfishness, hostility and injustice, not only all around us, but also in our own hearts. We are troubled by the growing gap in our societies between rich and poor. We see signs of an idolatry of wealth, power and pleasure which come at a high cost to human lives. Closer to home, so many of our own friends and contemporaries, even in the midst of immense material prosperity, are suffering from spiritual poverty, loneliness and quiet despair. God seems to be removed from the picture. It is almost as though a spiritual desert is beginning to spread throughout our world. It affects the young too, robbing them of hope and even, in all too many cases, of life itself.
Yet this is the world into which you are called to go forth and bear witness to the Gospel of hope, the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and the promise of his Kingdom. In the parables, Jesus tells us that the Kingdom comes into the world quietly, growing silently yet surely wherever it is welcomed by hearts open to its message of hope and salvation. The Gospel teaches us that the Spirit of Jesus can bring new life to every human heart and can transform every situation, even the most apparently hopeless. This is the message which you are called to share with your contemporaries: at school, in the workplace, in your families, your universities and your communities. Because Jesus rose from the dead, we know that he has “the words of eternal life” (Jn 6:68), that his word has the power to touch every heart, to conquer evil with good, and to change and redeem the world.
Dear young friends, in this generation the Lord is counting on you! He entered your hearts on the day of your Baptism; he gave you his Spirit on the day of your Confirmation; and he strengthens you constantly by his presence in the Eucharist, so that you can be his witnesses before the world. Are you ready to say “yes” to him? Are you ready?
Let me offer you three suggestions on how you can be genuine and joyful witnesses to the Gospel. Think about them and try to make them your rule of life.
First, count on the strength Christ gives you. Never lose hope in the truth of his word and the power of his grace! You were baptized into his passover from death to life, and confirmed in the power of the Holy Spirit who dwells in our hearts. Never doubt that spiritual power!
Second, remain close to the Lord in daily prayer. Worship God. Don’t forget to worship the Lord. Let his Spirit lift up your hearts and help you to know and do the Father’s will. Draw joy and strength from the Eucharist. Keep your hearts pure and focused by regular reception of the sacrament of Penance. I would like you to take an active and generous part in the life of your parishes. Also, do not neglect the Gospel of love; try to be involved as best you can in works of charity.
Finally, surrounded as you are by so many lights contrary to the Gospel, I ask that your every thought, word and action be guided by the wisdom of Christ’s word and the power of his truth. He will teach you how to test all things, and day by day to know what plans he has for you. If he calls you to serve him in the priesthood or the religious life, he will give you the grace not to be afraid to say yes! He will show you the way to true happiness and fulfillment.
Now it is time for me to go. I look forward to seeing you in these days and speaking to you again when we gather for Holy Mass on Sunday. For now, let us thank the Lord for the blessings of this time together and ask him for the strength to be faithful and joyful witnesses of his love throughout Asia and the entire world.
May Mary, our Mother, watch over you and keep you ever close to Jesus her Son. And from his place in heaven, may Saint John Paul II, who initiated the World Youth Days, always be your guide. With great affection I give you my blessing.

Incontro con i giovani dell’Asia
Solmoe, Tempo dei Martiri Coreani, 15 agosto 2014 Cari giovani amici, ≪E bello per noi essere qui!≫ (Mt 17,4). Queste parole furono pronunciate da san Pietro sul Monte Tabor quando si trovo alla presenza di Gesu trasfigurato in gloria. E davvero bello per noi essere qui, insieme, presso questo Santuario dei Martiri Coreani, nei quali la gloria del Signore si rivelo all’aurora della vita della Chiesa in questo Paese. In questa vasta assemblea, che raccoglie insieme giovani cristiani da tutta l’Asia, possiamo in un certo modo percepire la gloria di Gesu presente in mezzo a noi, presente nella sua Chiesa che abbraccia ogni nazione, lingua e popolo, presente nella potenza del suo Santo Spirito che rende nuove, giovani e vive tutte le cose.
Vi ringrazio per la vostra calorosa accoglienza e per il dono del vostro entusiasmo, per i canti pieni di gioia, le testimonianze di fede e le belle espressioni della varieta e della ricchezza delle vostre diverse culture. In modo particolare ringrazio i tre giovani che hanno condiviso con me le vostre speranze, inquietudini e preoccupazioni; le ho ascoltate attentamente, e le porto nel mio animo. Ringrazio il Vescovo Lazzaro You Heung-sik per le sue parole di benvenutoMa e vi saluto tutti dal profondo del cuore.
Questo pomeriggio vorrei fermarmi a riflettere con voi su un aspetto del tema di questa Sesta Giornata Asiatica della Gioventu: “La gloria dei Martiri risplende su di voi”. Come il Signore fece risplendere la sua gloria nell’eroica testimonianza dei martiri, allo stesso modo Egli desidera che la sua gloria risplenda nella vostra vita e attraverso di voi desidera illuminare la vita di questo grande Continente. Oggi Cristo bussa alla porta del vostro cuore. Vi chiama ad alzarvi, ad essere pienamente desti e attenti, a vedere le cose che nella vita contano davvero. E ancora di piu, Egli vi chiede di andare per le strade e le vie di questo mondo e bussare alla porta dei cuori degli altri, invitandoli ad accoglierlo nella loro vita.
Questo grande raduno dei giovani dell’Asia ci permette di scorgere qualcosa di cio che la Chiesa stessa e chiamata ad essere nell’eterno progetto di Dio. Insieme con i giovani di ogni luogo, voi volete adoperarvi ad edificare un mondo in cui tutti vivano insieme in pace ed amicizia, superando le barriere, ricomponendo le divisioni, rifiutando la violenza e il pregiudizio. E questo e esattamente cio che Dio vuole da noi. La Chiesa e germe di unita per l’intera famiglia umana. In Cristo tutte le nazioni e i popoli sono chiamati ad un’unita che non distrugge la diversita ma la riconosce, la riconcilia e la arricchisce.
Come appare lontano lo spirito del mondo da questa stupenda visione e da questo progetto! Quante volte sembra che i semi di bene e di speranza che cerchiamo di seminare siano soffocati dai rovi dell’egoismo, dell’ostilita e dell’ingiustizia, non solo intorno a noi, ma anche nei nostri stessi cuori. Siamo turbati dal crescente divario nelle nostre societa tra ricchi e poveri. Scorgiamo segni di idolatria della ricchezza, del potere e del piacere che si ottengono con costi altissimi nella vita degli uomini. Vicino a noi, molti nostri amici e coetanei, anche se circondati da una grande prosperita materiale, soffrono di poverta spirituale, di solitudine e silenziosa disperazione. Sembra quasi che Dio sia stato rimosso da questo orizzonte. E quasi come se un deserto spirituale si stesse propagando in tutto il mondo. Colpisce anche i giovani, derubandoli della speranza e, in troppi casi, anche della vita stessa.
E tuttavia questo e il mondo, nel quale voi siete chiamati ad andare per testimoniare il Vangelo della speranza, il Vangelo di Gesu Cristo e la promessa del suo Regno. Nelle parabole, Gesu ci insegna che il Regno entra nel mondo in modo umile e si sviluppa in silenzio e costantemente la dove e accolto da cuori aperti al suo messaggio di speranza e di salvezza. Il Vangelo ci insegna che lo Spirito di Gesu puo portare nuova vita al cuore di ogni uomo e puo trasformare ogni situazione, anche quelle apparentemente senza speranza. Questo e il messaggio che voi siete chiamati a condividere con i vostri coetanei: nella scuola, nel mondo del lavoro, nelle vostre famiglie, nell’universita e nelle vostre comunita. In forza del fatto che Gesu e risorto dai morti, noi sappiamo che Egli ha ≪parole di vita eterna≫ (Gv 6,68) e che la sua Parola ha il potere di toccare ogni cuore, di vincere il male con il bene e di cambiare e redimere il mondo.
Cari giovani amici, in questo nostro tempo il Signore conta su di voi! Egli e entrato nei vostri cuori nel giorno del vostro Battesimo; vi ha dato il suo Spirito nel giorno della vostra Confermazione; vi fortifica costantemente attraverso la sua presenza nell’Eucaristia, cosi che possiate essere suoi testimoni davanti al mondo. Siete pronti a dirgli “si”? Siete pronti?
Permettetemi di offrirvi tre suggerimenti su come potete essere testimoni autentici e gioiosi del Vangelo. Pensateci, e cercate di farne la vostra regola di vita.
Primo, fate affidamento sulla forza che Cristo vi dona! Non perdete mai la speranza nella verita della sua parola e nella forza della sua grazia! Voi siete stati battezzati nel suo passaggio dalla morte alla vita, e confermati nella potenza dello Spirito Santo che abita nei vostri cuori. Non dubitate mai di questa forza spirituale!
Secondo, rimanete vicini al Signore con la preghiera di ogni giorno. Adorate Dio. Non dimenticatevi di adorare il Signore. Il suo Spirito elevi i vostri cuori e vi aiuti a conoscere e fare la volonta del Padre. Attingete gioia e forza dall’Eucaristia. I vostri cuori siano puri e ben orientati mediante la celebrazione regolare del sacramento della Penitenza. Desidero che la vostra partecipazione alla vita delle vostre parrocchie sia attiva e generosa; e poi non dimenticate il Vangelo dell’amore, della carita, prendendo parte come meglio potete alle iniziative di carita.
E infine, in mezzo a tante luci contrarie al Vangelo, vi auguro che i vostri pensieri, parole ed azioni siano sempre guidati dalla saggezza della parola di Cristo e dalla forza della sua verita. Lui vi insegnera a valutare bene ogni cosa e a conoscere ogni giorno il suo progetto su di voi. Se Egli vi chiama a servirlo nel sacerdozio o nella vita religiosa, vi dara la grazia di non avere timore a dirgli di si. Egli vi mostrera la via verso la vera felicita e la vera pienezza.
Ma ora vi devo lasciare. Saro felice di vedervi in queste giornate e di parlarvi ancora quando, domenica, ci troveremo per la Santa Messa. Intanto ringraziamo il Signore per i doni che ci ha concesso in questo tempo trascorso insieme e chiediamogli la forza di essere testimoni fedeli e gioiosi del suo amore in ogni parte dell’Asia e del mondo intero.
Maria, nostra Madre, vi protegga e vi mantenga sempre vicini a Gesu suo Figlio. E vi accompagni dal Cielo anche san Giovanni Paolo II, iniziatore delle Giornate Mondiali della Gioventu. Con grande affetto imparto a voi tutti la mia benedizione. |
