2014년 8월 15일 그리스도 안에서 사랑하는 형제자매 여러분, 온 교회와 일치하여, 우리는 성모님께서 육신과 영혼을 지니신 채 천국의 영광 안으로 올라가신 성모 승천 대축일 미사를 봉헌하고 있습니다. 성모 마리아의 승천은 하느님의 자녀이며 그리스도의 지체인 우리들의 숙명을 보여 줍니다. 우리 어머니이신 성모님처럼, 우리도 또한 죄와 죽음을 이기신 주님의 승리에 온전히 동참하도록, 그리고 주님의 영원한 나라를 주님과 함께 다스리도록 부르심을 받았습니다.
제1독서에서 선포된, “태양을 입고 …… 머리에 열두 개 별로 된 관을 쓴 여인”(묵시 12,1)이라는 “큰 표징”은 하느님이신 아드님 곁에 영광스럽게 앉으신 마리아를 바라보도록 우리를 초대합니다. 또한 부활하신 주님께서 지금 이 순간에도 우리 앞에 열어 놓으시는 미래를 알아보도록 우리를 초대합니다. 한국인들은 그 역사적인 경험에 비추어 이 국가의 역사와 민족의 삶 안에서 활동하시는 성모님의 사랑과 전구를 인식하면서, 전통적으로 이 대축일을 거행하고 있습니다.
오늘 제2독서에서는, 새로운 아담이신 그리스도께서 아버지의 뜻에 순종하시어 죄와 종살이의 왕국을 무너뜨리시고, 자유와 생명의 나라를 여셨다는 성 바오로 사도의 말씀(1코린 15,24-25 참조)을 들었습니다. 참된 자유는 아버지의 뜻을 사랑하는 마음으로 받아들이는 데에 있습니다. 은총이 가득하신 성모 마리아에게서, 우리는 그리스도인의 자유가 단순히 죄에서 벗어나는 일보다 더 크다는 것을 배우게 됩니다. 그것은 영적으로 세상의 현실을 바라보는 새로운 길을 열어 주는 자유입니다. 하느님과 형제자매들을 깨끗한 마음으로 사랑하는 자유이며, 그리스도의 나라가 오기를 기다리는 기쁨이 가득한 희망 안에서 살아가는 자유입니다.
오늘 하늘의 모후이신 성모 마리아를 공경하면서, 우리는 또한 한국 교회의 어머니이신 그분께 간청합니다. 세례 때에 우리가 받은 존엄한 자유에 충실하도록 우리를 도와주실 것을 간청합니다. 하느님의 계획대로 세상을 변모시키려는 우리의 노력을 이끌어 주시도록 간청합니다. 또한 이 나라의 교회가 한국 사회의 한가운데 에서 하느님 나라의 누룩으로 더욱 충만히 부풀어 오르게 도와주실 것을 간청합니다. 이 나라의 그리스도인들이 사회의 모든 영역에서 정신적 쇄신을 가져오는 풍성한 힘이 되기를 빕니다. 그들이 올바른 정신적 가치와 문화를 짓누르는 물질주의의 유혹에 맞서, 그리고 이기주의와 분열을 일으키는 무한 경쟁의 사조에 맞서 싸우기를 빕니다. 새로운 형태의 가난을 만들어 내고 노동자들을 소외시키는 비인간적인 경제 모델들을 거부하기를 빕니다. 생명이신 하느님과 하느님의 모상을 경시하고, 모든 남성과 여성과 어린이의 존엄성을 모독하는 죽음의 문화를 배척하기를 빕니다.
고귀한 전통을 물려받은 한국 천주교인으로서 여러분은 그 유산의 가치를 드높이고, 이를 미래 세대에 물려주라는 부르심을 받고 있습니다. 그러기 위해서는 우리 한 사람 한 사람이 하느님의 말씀에 따라 새롭게 회개하여야 하고, 우리 가운데 있는 가난하고 궁핍한 이들과 힘없는 이들에게 깊은 관심을 기울여야 합니다.
이 대축일을 거행하면서, 우리는 전 세계에 흩어져 있는 모든 교회와 일치하여 우리 희망의 어머니이신 마리아를 바라봅니다. ‘성모의 노래’는 하느님께서 당신의 자비로운 약속을 결코 잊지 않으신다는 사실을 일깨워 줍니다(루카 1,54-55 참고). 성모 마리아께서는 “주님께서 하신 말씀이 이루어지리라고 믿으신 분!”(루카 1,45)이기에 복되십니다. 그분 안에서, 하느님의 모든 약속은 진실하게 드러났습니다. 영광 속에 앉으신 성모님께서는 우리들의 희망이 현실이라는 것을 보여 주십니다. 지금 이 순간에도 그 희망은 “우리 생명을 위한 안전하고 견고한 닻과 같아”(히브 6,19 참조) 그리스도께서 영광 속에 앉으신 곳에 닿게 합니다.
이 희망은, 사랑하는 형제자매 여러분, 복음이 제시하는 이 희망은, 외적으로는 부유해도 내적으로 쓰라린 고통과 허무를 겪는 그런 사회 속에서 암처럼 자라나는 절망의 정신에 대한 해독제입니다. 이러한 절망이 얼마나 많은 우리의 젊은이들에게 피해를 주고 있습니까! 오늘날 우리 곁에 있는 이런 젊은이들이 기쁨과 확신을 찾고, 결코 희망을 빼앗기지 않기를 바랍니다!
하느님의 어머니이신 성모님께 은총을 청합시다. 우리가 하느님 자녀들의 자유를 누리며 기뻐할 수 있도록, 그 자유를 지혜롭게 사용하여 형제자매를 섬길 수 있도록, 그리고 다스림이 곧 섬김인 영원한 나라에서 완성될 바로 그 희망의 표징으로서 일하며 살아갈 수 있도록, 성모님의 은총을 간청합시다. 아멘. <English> Homily of His Holiness Pope Francis
Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
In union with the whole Church, we celebrate the Assumption of Our Lady, body and soul, into the glory of heaven. Mary’s Assumption shows us our own destiny as God’s adoptive children and members of the body of Christ. Like Mary our Mother, we are called to share fully in the Lord’s victory over sin and death, and to reign with him in his eternal Kingdom.
The “great sign” presented in today’s first reading ? a woman clothed in the sun and crowned by stars (cf. Rev 12:1) ? invites us to contemplate Mary enthroned in glory beside her divine Son. It also invites us to acknowledge the future which even now the Risen Lord is opening before us. Koreans traditionally celebrate this feast in the light of their historical experience, seeing the loving intercession of Our Lady at work in the history of the nation and the lives of its people.
In today’s second reading, we heard Saint Paul tell us that Christ is the new Adam, whose obedience to the Father’s will has overturned the reign of sin and bondage and inaugurated the reign of life and freedom (cf. 1 Cor 15:24-25). True freedom is found in our loving embrace of the Father’s will. From Mary, full of grace, we learn that Christian freedom is more than liberation from sin. It is freedom for a new, spiritual way of seeing earthly realities. It is the freedom to love God and our brothers and sisters with a pure heart, and to live a life of joyful hope for the coming of Christ’s Kingdom.
Today, in venerating Mary, Queen of Heaven, we also turn to her as Mother of the Church in Korea. We ask her to help us to be faithful to the royal freedom we received on the day of our Baptism, to guide our efforts to transform the world in accordance with God’s plan, and to enable the Church in this country to be ever more fully a leaven of his Kingdom in the midst of Korean society. May the Christians of this nation be a generous force for spiritual renewal at every level of society. May they combat the allure of a materialism that stifles authentic spiritual and cultural values and the spirit of unbridled competition which generates selfishness and strife. May they also reject inhumane economic models which create new forms of poverty and marginalize workers, and the culture of death which devalues the image of God, the God of life, and violates the dignity of every man, woman and child.
As Korean Catholics, heirs to a noble tradition, you are called to cherish this legacy and transmit it to future generations. This will demand of everyone a renewed conversion to the word of God and a passionate concern for the poor, the needy and the vulnerable in our midst.
In celebrating this feast, we join the Church throughout the world in looking to Mary as our Mother of Hope. Her song of praise reminds us that God never forgets his promise of mercy (cf. Lk 1:54-55). Mary is the one who is blessed because “she believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her by the Lord” (Lk 1:45). In her, all God’s promises have been proved trustworthy. Enthroned in glory, she shows us that our hope is real; even now it reaches as “a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul” (Heb 6:19) to where Jesus is seated in glory.
This hope, dear brothers and sisters, the hope held out by the Gospel, is the antidote to the spirit of despair that seems to grow like a cancer in societies which are outwardly affluent, yet often experience inner sadness and emptiness. Upon how many of our young has this despair taken its toll! May they, the young who surround us in these days with their joy and confidence, never be robbed of their hope!
Let us turn to Our Lady and implore the grace to rejoice in the freedom of the children of God, to use that freedom wisely in the service of our brothers and sisters, and to live and work as signs of the hope which will find its fulfillment in that eternal Kingdom where to reign is to serve. Amen.

Assunzione della Beata Vergine Maria

Cari fratelli e sorelle in Cristo,
in unione con tutta la Chiesa celebriamo l’Assunzione della Madonna in corpo e anima nella gloria del Paradiso. L’Assunzione di Maria ci mostra il nostro destino quali figli adottivi di Dio e membri del Corpo di Cristo. Come Maria nostra Madre, siamo chiamati a partecipare pienamente alla vittoria del Signore sul peccato e sulla morte e a regnare con Lui nel suo Regno eterno. Il “grande segno” presentato nella prima lettura ? una donna vestita di sole e coronata di stelle (cfr Ap 12,1) ? ci invita a contemplare Maria, intronizzata in gloria accanto al suo Figlio divino. Ci invita inoltre a prendere coscienza del futuro che ancora oggi il Signore Risorto apre davanti a noi. I coreani tradizionalmente celebrano questa festa alla luce della loro esperienza storica, riconoscendo l’amorevole intercessione di Maria operante nella storia della nazione e nella vita del popolo. Nella seconda lettura odierna abbiamo ascoltato san Paolo affermare che Cristo e il nuovo Adamo, la cui obbedienza alla volonta del Padre ha abbattuto il regno del peccato e della schiavitu ed ha inaugurato il regno della vita e della liberta (cfr 1 Cor 15,24-25). La vera liberta si trova nell’accoglienza amorosa della volonta del Padre. Da Maria, piena di grazia, impariamo che la liberta cristiana e qualcosa di piu della semplice liberazione dal peccato. E’ la liberta che apre ad un nuovo modo spirituale di considerare le realta terrene, la liberta di amare Dio e i fratelli e le sorelle con un cuore puro e di vivere nella gioiosa speranza della venuta del Regno di Cristo.
Oggi, mentre veneriamo Maria Regina del Cielo, ci rivolgiamo a Lei quale Madre della Chiesa in Corea. Le chiediamo di aiutarci ad essere fedeli alla liberta regale che abbiamo ricevuto nel giorno del Battesimo, di guidare i nostri sforzi per trasformare il mondo secondo il piano di Dio, e di rendere capace la Chiesa in questo Paese di essere piu pienamente lievito del suo Regno all’interno della societa coreana. Possano i cristiani di questa nazione essere una forza generosa di rinnovamento spirituale in ogni ambito della societa. Combattano il fascino di un materialismo che soffoca gli autentici valori spirituali e culturali e lo spirito di sfrenata competizione che genera egoismo e conflitti. Respingano inoltre modelli economici disumani che creano nuove forme di poverta ed emarginano i lavoratori, e la cultura della morte che svaluta l’immagine di Dio, il Dio della vita, e viola la dignita di ogni uomo, donna e bambino.
Come cattolici coreani, eredi di una nobile tradizione, siete chiamati a valorizzare questa eredita e a trasmetterla alle future generazioni. Cio comporta per ognuno la necessita di una rinnovata conversione alla Parola di Dio e un’intensa sollecitudine per i poveri, i bisognosi e i deboli in mezzo a noi.
Nel celebrare questa festa, ci uniamo a tutta la Chiesa sparsa nel mondo e guardiamo a Maria come Madre della nostra speranza. Il suo cantico di lode ci ricorda che Dio non dimentica mai le sue promesse di misericordia (cfr Lc 1,54-55). Maria e beata perche ≪ha creduto nell’adempimento di cio che il Signore le ha detto≫ (Lc 1,45). In lei tutte le promesse divine si sono dimostrate veritiere. Intronizzata nella gloria, ci mostra che la nostra speranza e reale; e fin d’ora tale speranza si protende ≪come un’ancora sicura e salda per la nostra vita≫ (Eb 6,19) la dove Cristo e assiso nella gloria.
Questa speranza, cari fratelli e sorelle, la speranza offerta dal Vangelo, e l’antidoto contro lo spirito di disperazione che sembra crescere come un cancro in mezzo alla societa che e esteriormente ricca, ma tuttavia spesso sperimenta interiore amarezza e vuoto. A quanti nostri giovani tale disperazione ha fatto pagare il suo tributo! Possano i giovani che sono attorno a noi in questi giorni con la loro gioia e la loro fiducia, non essere mai derubati della loro speranza! Rivolgiamoci a Maria, Madre di Dio, e imploriamo la grazia di essere gioiosi nella liberta dei figli di Dio, di usare tale liberta in modo saggio per servire i nostri fratelli e sorelle, e di vivere e operare in modo da essere segni di speranza, quella speranza che trovera il suo compimento nel Regno eterno, la dove regnare e servire.
